The SODIUM-HF study examined the effects of a low-salt diet compared to usual dietary recommendations for people with heart failure The trial took place in many centres across Australia, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Mexico, and New Zealand, and included a total of 806 patients.

Participants in the SODIUM-HF study had to:

  • Have symptoms of heart failure

  • Eat more than 1,500 mg a day of sodium/salt.

Patients were randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) into 1 of 2 treatment groups:

(50% chance for
each group):

Usual dietary
recommendations group

Half of the people in the study followed a low salt diet, and the other half received usual dietary recommendations for reduction of salt intake. Regardless of study treatment, participants continued to receive their standard therapy and treatment for heart failure.
